Traveling by caravan from Zimbabwe to South Africa seems like an exciting trip. But the real magic happens when one climbs into that caravan in tears of sadness and re-emerges in tears of joy. Ncazelo Ncube – who used to work for the Nelson Mandela Children Fund – is nowadays doing cutting-edge work in mental health in the outskirts of Johannesburg using the most extraordinary artistic approaches to help women, families, and entire communities fight gender-based violence, AIDS and conflict.
Perhaps the most remarkable feature of Ncazelo is — inspired by Nelson Mandela — her profound belief in Africa and Africans. I will never forget her words, “when you start believing that your future is in someone else’s hands, that’s the beginning of the end.”
